What is Knee Replacement?

Total knee replacement (TKR), also referred to as total knee arthroplasty (TKA), is a surgical procedure where worn, diseased, or damaged surfaces of a knee joint are removed and replaced with artificial surfaces. The word 'arthritis' means 'inflammation of the joint.' Most people think of arthritis as the wearing away of cartilage in a joint -- this is the end result of inflammation within the joint. Over time, the inflammation can lead to cartilage loss and exposed bone, instead of a normal, smooth joint surface. The most common type of knee arthritis is osteoarthritis. This is often referred to as "wear-and-tear" arthritis, and it results in the wearing away of the normal smooth cartilage until bare bone is exposed. Other types of arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, and lupus arthritis. Materials used for resurfacing of the joint are not only strong and durable but also optimal for joint function as they produce as little friction as possible.

The procedure has been proven to help individuals return back to moderately challenging activities such as golf, bicycling, and swimming. Total knees are not designed for jogging, or sports like tennis and skiing (although there certainly are people with total knee replacements that participate in such sports). The general goal of total knee replacement is designed to provide painless and unlimited standing, sitting, walking, and other normal activities of daily living

What is Hip Replacement and Hip Resurfacing?
Hip replacement (total hip replacement), is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. Replacing the hip joint consists of replacing both the acetabulum and the femoral head. Such joint replacement orthopedic surgery generally is conducted to relieve arthritis pain or fix severe physical joint damage as part of hip fracture treatment and improve hip function. Hip replacement is currently the most successful and reliable orthopedic operation with 97% of patients reporting improved outcome.

Hip resurfacing arthroplasty is a type of hip replacement that replaces the arthritic surface of the joint but removes far less bone than the traditional total hip replacement. Because the hip resurfacing removes less bone, it may be preferable for younger patients that are expected to need a second, or revision, hip replacement surgery as they grow older and wear out the original artificial hip replacement.

Facts about Total Hip Replacement
  • There are approximately 150,000 artificial hip joints implanted annually in the United States, with the success rate over 90%.
  • The majority of individuals in need of hip replacement are in their 60s and 70s.
  • Depending on the condition, people in their late teens and in their 90s can possibly be candidates for a hip replacement.
  • New materials used in total hip replacement are very durable and are expected to last more than 10 years in 90% of individuals receiving total hips.

Eye Surgery

Cataract Non Foldable and Phaco
What is a Cataract?
Cataract surgery is the removal of the natural lens of the eye (also called "crystalline lens") that has developed an opacification, which is referred to as a cataract. Metabolic changes of the crystalline lens fibers over the time lead to the development of the cataract and loss of transparency, causing impairment or loss of vision. During cataract surgery, a patient's cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a synthetic lens to restore the lens's transparency.

Following surgical removal of the natural lens, an artificial intraocular lens implant is inserted (eye surgeons say that the lens is "implanted"). Cataract surgery is generally performed by an ophthalmologist (eye surgeon) in a surgical center or hospital, using local anesthesia, usually causing little or no discomfort to the patient.

What causes a Cataract? The development of cataract in an adult is related to some of the below reasons
  • Aging
  • Sunlight Exposure
  • Smoking
  • Poor Nutrition
  • Eye Trauma
  • Use of Steroids

What are the symptoms?
  • Decrease in vision
  • Sight for distance and near objects
  • Seeing multiple images of one object
  • Painless blurring of vision
  • Glare and reduction of vision in bright light.
  • Fading of colors
Is Cataract Curable? There are no medicines to treat cataract. The answer lies only in surgery where the cataract is removed and replace by an intra-ocular lens. Types of Cataract Operations 1. Cataract Non Foldable Phaco Foldable IOL : These lenses give full advantage of phaco surgery. These lenses are made of special material so IOL is flexible and can be folded . Thus we need not enlarge the incision and whole surgery can be done by 3.00mm cut.

The fluid exerts pressure on vital parts of the eye like optic nerve and causes irreversible damage. Initially, field vision is affected. It usually occurs among the people above 40 years of age especially who have family history of glaucoma. Glaucoma cannot be prevented, but blindness due to glaucoma can be avoided, if detected early and treated properly and regularly. Symptoms
  • Seeing of coloured halos around the source of light
  • Headache and pain in the eye
  • Gradual loss of side vision and restriction of field of vision
